Adam smith said in his wealth of Nations:

THE annual labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessaries and conveniences of life which it annually consumes, and which consist always either in the immediate produce of that labour, or in what is purchased with that produce from other nations.

According therefore as this produce, or what is purchased with it, bears a greater or smaller proportion to the number of those who are to consume it, the nation will be better or worse supplied with all the necessaries and conveniences for which it has occasion.

But this proportion must in every nation be regulated by two different circumstances; first, by the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which its labour is generally applied; and, secondly, by the proportion between the number of those who are employed in useful labour, and that of those who are not so employed. Whatever be the soil, climate, or extent of territory of any particular nation, the abundance or scantiness of its annual supply must, in that particular situation, depend upon those two circumstances.

Dr. Ramchandra Maharaj Parnerkar, with showing due respect to all thinkers, quoted that the concept of labour & food for labour is the reason proxyma of all the problem that world is facing today.

Adam smith suggested that produce that labour generates for it’s nation should be distributed and regulated by two different criterion. First, skills or the ability to work and earn the produce. Second, by the number of people emplloyed in generating this produce.

Dr. Ramchandra Maharaj Parnerkar, in his philosophy of economics which later termed as Poornawadi Ecnomics (Read more on Poornawad), suggested that the ownership institution which gave birth to the concept of Labour & food for labour. Man in his selfish approach created the institutions & created its virtues and sins. The thoughts that jeoperdies the existance of the instituion was termed as sins and thoughts supporting are termed as virtues.

Now let us discuss in detail about this institution of ownership & how this concept of labour & food for labour came into existance.

Dr. Ramchandra Maharaj Parneker’s deep thinking & visionary approach puts him before the Admin smith’s Economic philosophy.

Dr. Parnerkar, in his book Poornawadi Ecnomics says that, The institution of Ownership was man made but the genesis of this institution is motherhood, which is god made. Everymother when claims that “This is my child” as she as begotten the child, she accepts the bitter truth that she, alone is incapable of rearing & nurturing a child. She, therefore accepts the unrestrained authority of man to rear a child & nourish it.

This brought noticable changes on man’s life. This gave birth to the concept of ownership & following sub-concepts were born.

1) Ownership of Wife

2) Ownership of offspring

3) Ownership of land

4) Ownership of animals

And so on…

Man started to live in this institution by creating laws to support this concept & indorectly his institution. There came the concept of a tribe & its leader, king and its kingdom, emperor & its empire, city & its city head and so on…

Here man created its virtues and sins. The thoughts that jeoperdies the existance of the instituion was termed as sins and thoughts supporting are termed as virtues.

Agriculture was the major source of income & wealth at that point of time. Alvin Toffler, in his book “The third wave” terms this as First wave which prevailed in much of the world after the Neolithic Revolution, which replaced hunter-gatherer cultures.

This wave was soon replaced by Industrialism, which was termed as a second wave.

As, this new wave started to create its presence, man again in his selfish approach started to create new rules, law & all together new institution called as Communism.

This removed some of the cultures one of them was Culture of Slavery. This was needed because man was in need of a workforce in this Industrial age. Later when people needed in factories, ships, man created yet another concept & granted women all the freedom, i.e. freedome of working equally. Eagletarian society as we may call it.

It created:

1) Equality for women

2) Rule of a Law

3) Gave birth to communism

All this was althout relevant to the society at that phase of time, but neglects the basis of all so formed institutions. It undermines the basic statement of economics and so created the concept of “Labour & food for labour”

We will learn more on this institution & study thoughts of Dr. Parnerkar Maharaj in detail in next article of this series.
