List of Essential Oils and their usage

Continuing our earlier article, Things you should know about the Essential Oils, here we present you the list of some more essential oils. These oils will help immensely when used properly or under the observation of expert aromatherapist. This second article discusses how to use aroma oils on various disorders like insomnia, menstrual problems, asthama, muscle pain and much more. FRANKINCENSE:

Its botanical name is olibanum boswellia carterii, It is prepared from gumresin. It soothes up mind and body and helps in relaxing and fortifying mind and body. It gives calm sleep and thus treats stubborn insomnia, helps in meditation, slows and deepens breathing activity and thus increases and improves  oxygen saturation in blood. Also opens up crown charka, builts up courage to fight back fear, fright and nightmares, heals up wounds, treats dry, wrinkled and burning skin, promotes healing, reduces scars of wounds. It is a great skin toner and cures coughs, laryngitis, asthma, bronchitis. Dose is max 3 to 6 drops can be used..

ROSEMARY:

Botanical name is rosemarinus officinalis. Prepared from leaves  and flowers. Its a complete hair tonic. It treats dandruff better than anything else. Clears off lice and adds luster to hair, reduces stress and mental fatigue, muscle pain, migraine, menstrual cramps, improves concentration and thus aids in studies. Other than this, improve circulation, fluid retention, cellulite, menstrual cramps n scanty flow. You should avoid its use during pregnancy or if suffering from hypertension or epilepsy. Dose is max 2 to 5 drops can be used.

 SANDALWOOD:

Its botanical name is santalum album..it is prepared from wood. It helps to release nervous tension as it has relaxing, calming and sedating effect thus also helps to relieve stree, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, dry coughs, nausea, traveling sickness. Its great for skin and thus heals up cracked, inflamed, dry, chapped, ageing and mature skin. It clears acne, blemishes and scars. It acts as a deodorizer during sweating..it excites the senses..Dose is max 2 to 5 drops can be used..

 TEA TREE:

Botanical name is melaleuca alternifolia and is prepared from its leaves and twigs. It helps to clear off fungal and yeast infections..it has soothing effect  and so is also useful in burns, cold sores, stings of insects, herpes, nappy rash and bacterial or viral infections. Dose is max 2 to 4 drops can be used.

 TARRAGON:

Botanical name is artemesia dracunculus and is prepared from leaves. It is very useful in stomach disorders, indigestion, flatulence, pain, cramps, constipation. It relieves fluid retention before menses and so can be useful in PMT {pre menstrual tension} as it has diuretic action also. It relieves nervous attacks leading to knots is stomach. Dose is 2 to 3 drops are enough to use. Also it should be avoided in pregnancy.

NOTE:

Do not forget to carry out a patch test. Wash and pat your skin dry, apply a drop on forearm and rub it nicely. Leave it for an hour. If any kind of irritation occurs, wash the forearm immediately. These oils are very potent and so keep them out of reach of kids as accidental poisoning may occur. Also it has been observed that persistent use of same oil for longer period of time can cause toxic reactions. So discontinue the use once you get the desired results or use it under the observation of aromatherapist. If oil gets in eyes, soak the cotton ball in milk and wipe off oil from eyes, then wash it with water by pouring it from jug..do not splash water in eyes. Consult the doctor if irritation persists.

 

There are many other essential oils to be discussed. The most correct methods to use these oils, I shall be discussing in further writings. So keep waiting till then.

    Dr Madam, i must say you really have made it very clear and ur articles are of much help. explaing about the dosage and all is nice. I will try doing these something of my own and if i get any prob where can i contact you? i will keep on reading ur articles..i aslo hae told my frndz to read..some of them also doc like u.
