Analysis of English section of last 7 years of CAT

Submitted by Ameya Pimpalgaonkar on November 3, 2009 – 11:49 am No Comment

Verbal has been most dreaded section of Common Admission Test (CAT). With CAT just at the door step, what should be the strategy that can ensure a good score in this section. If one starts noting down most probable types of questions then one would end up noting down following types:

1. RCs

2. Grammar

3. Para Jumble

4. Sentence Completion

5. CR

6. FIJs

7. Fill in the Blanks

8.  Homonyms

9) Rest of the questions like summary, upstream and down stream arguments et al

Out of all these types, one can surely bank on RC section for clearing the cut off. Read on. You will see in the following table that RC comprises close to 53% of Question if one is to sum up all questions from CAT 2001 till CAT 2006.

By now you must have got that hint of what I am trying to say here. Strategy is simple. Following table shall help you in understanding VA section in more detail.

Here we can clearly interpret that recently the inclination is more towards reasoning side.  Here we can clearly interpret that recently the inclination of IIMs is more towards reasoning side of English and it’s established beyond doubt that RC forms a major part of the CAT. Our target should be such ; that we should attempt 90% of the RC question with around 80% accuracy, which will ensure that we will be way above the cutoffs.

This sums up the strategy that one should weave around RCs that can make sure that you will clear this most feared section of CAT.
