IIFT 2009 - Analysis & Expected Cutoffs

And, the B-school entrance game begins. I am sure, now, you must be feeling the heat after IIFT exam. Total number of questions were 122, divided in 4 sections. Each section carrying different marking scheme with negative marking of 1/3rd. The biggest shock for students was the sectional cut-off introduced by IIFT.

Question paper’s pattern was designed in a way as to put equal importance on each section. Quantitative section was very hard compared to other sections, & the other sections of verbal, LR & DI contained more number of questions. The only relief was general awareness section.

Section-wise Analysis:

Unlike last year both DI & LR were combined into one section this year. LR based question were few compared to data oriented questions. This section was calculation intensive but also contained a few sitters. The question on “Color of house, salary & name of a person”was easy and should have attempted by everyone. Question on cabinet & minister combination was also easily doable. Other sets on sales of a cars, pulses & area under harvest were doable but involved calculations. However, 1-2 question in these sets were only observation based.

GK section was much easier compared to earlier IIFT GK sections. It contained minimum 10 straight question that should have attempted. This should not have taken more then 5-7 minutes of your time.

Quant section was one of the most dreaded sections this year. It had few sitters provided your are able to find them amongst other tough questions. I feel questions on arithmetic were doable but questions were lengthy. So if you are the one who decides to attempt or to leave the question based on its length, you are at loss this time. Almost all arithmetic questions were doable leaving out 2-3 tough questions.

Verbal section contained a subsection on English usage. RC were lengthy, but question were very easy. One should have attempted minimum 3 passages in this section in not more than 20 minutes. Usage section was termed as easy section by many institutes. However, considering an average student, vocab based question were tough. Though these question were easily doable provided you have a sound vocab. Para jumbles were tricky. Grammar based questions were doable. Overall one should have attempted 13+ questions here with high accuracy.

The expected cut-off & analysis -

Section 1: (Quantitative ability)

Total Q- 28.

Marks - 1 each.

Difficulty Level - Very difficult.

Min. attempt - 7.

Good attempt - 10/11+.

Section 2: (Verbal Abilities)

Total Q- 40. (RC = 15, Verbal = 25)

Marks - RC = 1 each. Verbal = 0.6.

Difficulty Level - Medium. (RC was easier. Other questions were difficult.)

Min. attempt - 13/14.

Good attempt - 19+.

Section 3: (Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation)

Total Q- 34.

Marks - 1 each.

Difficulty Level - Medium.

Min. attempt - 12.

Good attempt - 19+.

Section 4: (General Awareness)

Total Q- 20.

Marks - 0.4 each.

Difficulty Level -Easy.

Min. attempt - 10/11.

Good attempt - 15+.

    Ruchi,

    Last year’s expected cut off by institutes varied with a margin of 3-4 marks. TIME had predicted it at 24-26, IMS had expected 29+ etc. However, Last year’s actual cut off was 30+, So according to time, this year’s expected cut off is 26-28, I am sure this will surely go beyond 29-30.

    All the best for other exams.

    qa=5.4
    va/rc=13.6
    lr/di=9
    gk=3.2
    oa=31.2

    acc to various estimates from diff centres qa may have cutoff between 5-6.actually am very apprehensive that i may not clear the qa cut-off.is there any chance i may get a call?

    Dear Subho,

    There is a fair chance that you may get a call. Though nothing can be said as of now, but your score is not at all bad either. I would suggest stay positive, you may get a call.

    Sorry guys, I was definately NOT one of those who took this year’s IIFT 2009 test (I have done my share last to last year; Indeed it ws bad)

    But looking at the article (Courtesy - Ameya) and the following discussions (Courtesy - CV; Aniket; Ruchi; Subho) taking place, it does seems that IIFT had a new face to it. Plus I had a chance to see the pre and post test expressions of the examinees (Courtesy - Don Bosco School - Matunga, Mumbai) exactly before and after the IIFT 2009 was over. Indeed the expressions varied from Nervous to Shock to Surpirsed to Confident to Contented (though not in the same order).

    But Guys at this juncture, I feel let the numbers play their game. As of now, concentrate on the other Entrance Tests coming up.
    The most important one for every MBA aspirant (irrespective whether they wanna join the IIM’s league) is due this sunday. It has sobriquets as “The D Day”, “The finale”, “The Judgement Day” and bla bla…

    And for the same, I wish every CV, every, Aniket, every Ruchi, every Subho and every other person out there.
    Be confident; Revise and Revise and Revise; Clear every doubt that comes to you rather than leaving it for the next hour; Practise much;

    As they say, CAT 2009 is for a duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes. However, I think CAT is a matter of 135 minutes (or better say 8100 seconds)

    Wishing you guys and gals all the very best.

    God Bless… :)
