3D Television soon to enter your living room!

A mansion, a large living room, a home theater system with surround sound & a 42” 3D-HDTV system in front of you, more neurons firing, more adrenaline flowing as if you are on steroids. You probably have seen 3D movies in a theater number of times, but I am talking about your home.
Sony has announced their 3D HDTV for home use. It will be available sometime around mid-2010. The TV will come with active 3D glasses. These are electronic glasses that open & close in time rapidly, so that images are formed for left & right eye separately, eventually to create 3D effect. Without glasses the images will be blurred. Sony is also planning to launch other 3D compatible products – Viao laptops, Playstations, Blu-ray disc players etc. I am already fantasizing about playing with 3D images that would surround me.
Other companies like nVidia, Samsung, Sony have also announced competing products. Panasonic & Samsung have also showed off their products in recent fair. Hollywood is also pulling their sleeves up. Dreamworks has already started making all movies 3D since this year. They have tied up with Intel to provide compatible chips. Sony has made tie-ups with almost all the Hollywood biggies to supply 3D movies on Blu-ray disc. In US, NBA & NFL were telecasted live in 3D theatres. The events received huge response (of course, it’s NBA). If one is to believe the reports, you will be watching London Olympics in 3D.
To setup 3D TV at your home, you will need a new 3D compatible television, a Blu-Ray player, active 3D glasses & HDMI cable. Despite so much of hardware required, TV makers claim that 3D TVs will be available at affordable price. According to Panasonic, you will not have to pay much more than what you currently pay for HDTVs.
But, price is not the only aspect that questions the popularity of this technology. Currently, there are no formats to support broadcasting of 3D contents. Developing these standards would eventually lead to another ‘formats’ war’ like HD-DVD vs Blu Ray. With current technology active 3D glasses are mandatory. Though 3D technology is available without glasses, it would still take another 10 years to develop that technology for commercial use. How many of us would like to sit with their friends wearing those glasses, looking goofy? With current available technology, viewing angle is also not very wide.
Despite these drawbacks, it’s just the matter of time before technology breakthrough takes 3D to another level. The sheer thought of 3D TV arouses me. I am sure even you have got one more reason to stick your posterior in front of mad box.
