Apple iMac: Review Zero

Submitted by Ameya Pimpalgaonkar on January 1, 2010 – 2:49 pm Share/Save/Bookmark 2 Comments

Cults did it again. Seduction. They do it each time. And, every time you think they have reached culmination, bang, Apple does it again. Revised iMac beats the old one by miles. Let’s go through each component.

Display & Graphics:

iMac has two variants – 21.5” & 27”. Former one comes with 1920 x 1080 HD resolution & for the latter one, they have taken it beyond HD – 2560 x 1440. Yes, right, pop your eyes out of those sockets. As always iMac comes with slim-slick design & LED backlit for more light.

21.5” & 27” displays come with nVidia GeForce 9400M & ATI Raedon HD 4670 graphics card, respectively. But, both just have 256MB memory. With such power packed display, I was hoping for better graphics cards.

Audio:

Built-in stereo speakers with two internal 17W high efficiency amplifiers, only to knock your ears off. And, as new iMac’s screen is smiling from edges to edges, speakers are put along the side edges, talk about space optimisation.

Specifications & Performance:

21” is packed with 3GHz, Core2Duo, 3MB L2 cache memory processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM & supports upto 16GB. Yes, you read it, pick up your jaw from the ground as you can get 2.8GHz, quad core, 8MB L2 cache memory & Intel I7 processor with Turbo Boost dynamic performance in 27” version. With the best configuration Apple promises 2.4 times performance than the previous one. I say, worth every penny of $1199 (21”) & $1699 (27”).

Apple Deserts:

New iMac has wireless keyboard & mouse. And, that multi-touch mouse, oh, god! It’s more than your normal mouse – click, two button click, one finger scroll, zoom, two finger swipe, all that without scroll wheel, track ball & visible buttons.

And, if you did not have any orgasm yet, seriously, test your hormones.

I agree your positive comments 100% on the new iMac but you are slightly out as far as graphics are concerned. I am a happy owner of a new i7, received 16 Dec without any problems but it actually has a 512mb ATI graphics card.

My first iMac ever as I have been building and using PCs since DOD was invented and before with punch cards (yes I’m old) but I am really enjoying the jump from Gates to Jobs.

    Best wishes for 2010.

    Bryan,
My point was to write about basic models that iMac is offering. For 512 MB, you have to shell some more Euros. I guess with quad core I7 & 512 MB graphics card, things would run as smooth as ice.

Even I am looking forward to get Macbook Pro for myself. PCs are old dumb boxes. :)

Anyway, thanks for reading article & correcting.
