A wish-list for Windows 8

Submitted by Ameya Pimpalgaonkar on December 20, 2009 – 3:29 pm Share/Save/Bookmark 12 Comments

It’s set to release in 2012. Yes, ‘disaster year’. But, I am sure that’s just a coincidence. Anyway, I thought of reaching out to Microsoft. They still have more than two years, may be they will improve.

So, here’s my wish-list of this Christmas season:

1. Naked Windows 7 takes 9.5GB of space on my HDD. I lose around 11 movies. At least, give me back half of them. :|

2. When my account has administrator rights, for god’s sake don’t show me those errors - ‘you don’t have permission to access this folder’. If I don’t have, then who does? I mean, it’s my fucking OS & it’s my fucking PC. I know if I dig deep, (actually, it’s “real deep”) I can get access, but sometimes it simply refuses to work.

3. Your ’system volume information’ hogs more than a pig. I can’t afford to feed it. So go, steal Mac OS’ ‘Time Machine’.

4. A new version of OS/ software does not mean you have to change Menus, options or simply call them something else.

5. Please, please, don’t change the menus & options next time. And, make the system more intuitive. Oh, sorry! I forgot to give you reference. Please refer - Intuitive. You can also google ergonomics or something like that for some lessons.

6. I know generally speed & time are inversely proportional, but an OS’s speed should not follow that equation , should it?

7. Why does it not support more resolution than 1280×800 ? Wake up, it’s HD era.

8. And, short term memory loss problems are fun to watch in movies. It’s not so much fun when Windows Explorer keeps forgetting my folder settings.

On point 1: In today’s 2 TB HDD’s and with 1 TB drives going for $65 USD, a 9.5 GB OS installation is tiny. So, that’s a moot point.

Point 7: Really? Update your drivers. Seriously.

The rest are somewhat simple little quirks, but valid. I want a bit more for my buck. :)

    Dustin,

    Thanks for reading article. :)

Point 1: In that scenario, 9.5 GB does not matter a lot. But, I only have 200GB HDD. Of course I can afford 1TB USB HDD, but that should not be considered, should it? Most of the people I know around do not have more HDD than 300GB.

Point 7: I confirmed that with 3 different laptops, one of which was bought after Win 7 release. Anyway, I will dig into this.

I loved the way u expressed the “nake windows”. I am sure Windows 8 is not going to be better. MS has a tredition of making things complicated and this time also they will. I wish Mac gets little cheaper for poor chaps like me.

    Kurt,
    Thanks.

Yes, even I have lost hopes. Currently, I am exploring possibilities to install Mac OS on my Laptop. If I succeed, I will post ‘how to install Mac OC on PC/Laptop’. I really regret not buying Macbook, when I had the chance.

Dude Apple is selling Loepard in just 80$ here at Atlanta. You have any idea if I can install it on my system which is of course not an apple product :D

  • Ameya Pimpalgaonkar (author) said:

    Kurt,
Yes it’s pretty cheap compared to Windows OS.
Currently, I am doing my research on it. Just yesterday, after 12 hours I managed to install Snow Leopard on my laptop. Now, I am looking for it’s drivers, which are not widely available. As soon as I am done, I will post everything about Mac OS on PC/ Laptop.

I don’t think it will work at its best even after installing Mac OS on PC/laptop. Mac OS has been designed to fit into Mac Machine. Even if you succeed installing it, you will never get an optimum performance and that is someting apple meant for. I would suggest every one should look at apple products before buying a PC/laptop.

  • Ameya Pimpalgaonkar (author) said:

    Rubina,

Yes, i won’t get optimal performance. At this point, I just want to focus on - ‘how much do I manage to run on Mac OS+Laptop combo’. If it suits my needs, I might switch to that system. Anyway, my laptop was optimized(?) for Vista & I don’t get that kind of performance in Windows 7.
I have seen a lot of people who switch to this system. And, you bet, next time I am buying laptop, I am going for Macbook Pro.

Alpesh let me know how’re you planning to sponsor your Mac Pro. I remember those people in shabby outfits came to istore and bought Mac Pro and a samsung LCD  we should have kidnapped them and snatched the mac there itself. :P

I thought we were the only ones in shabby outfits there.
